Grading
Kendo grades recognise progress in skill, knowledge and spirit. Here's how grading works in South Australia and where to find national requirements.
How grading works
Kendo grades are divided into kyu grades (for those starting out) and dan grades (black-belt equivalent). Gradings are held periodically and assess your technique, footwork, etiquette and understanding. Your club will let you know when you are ready to attempt your next grade.
Kyu grades
Lower kyu gradings are run at state and club level. These are the first milestones for new kenshi and focus on the fundamentals — posture, cuts, footwork and reishiki (etiquette). Your instructor will prepare you and nominate you when the time is right.
Dan grades
Dan gradings are conducted under the Australian Kendo Renmei. Requirements, eligibility and grading panels follow national standards.
Preparing for a grading
Train consistently, attend gradings as a spectator first, and ask your sensei for guidance. Most importantly, focus on strong basics — graders look for correct, sincere kendo rather than flashy technique.
