Is kendo right for you?

The best way to find out is to see a session for yourself. Here is what kendo involves and what to expect on a first visit — when you are ready, find a club and come along to watch.

What to expect

A warm welcome

You are welcome to come and watch a session to see whether kendo suits you. Arrive a little early, and someone will look after you.

The basics first

You will begin with footwork, posture and etiquette before picking up a shinai. No experience is needed, and beginners are not struck.

Equipment to borrow

Clubs have training equipment to lend, so you can take part to begin without any of your own.

Frequently asked questions

None at all. Beginners are welcome, and an instructor will start you with the fundamentals — footwork, posture and etiquette — before anything else.

Come and see for yourself.

Find a club on the Where to Train page and arrange to come and watch a session. When you are ready, the club will guide you from there.
